We are grateful to Ludwig Meyer, Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, Munich, for identifying the artist and the sitter (letter of 7 October 2009). Ludwig Meyer thinks that the portrait must be dated after 1705 (after Joseph’s accession to the throne), when portraits of the new emperor appeared throughout Germany. Provenance: Swiss private collection
